There has been (another) discussion on the WRAL Sports Forum on "bandwagon" fans. Some folks think unless you graduated from the school you pull for, you're a "bandwagon" fan. Many people feel that Carolina has the most "bandwagon" fans than any other school. I didn't attend Carolina, but I've been a long time fan. I pull for them through thick and thin. While I won't argue that actually attending the school does add an extra element to fandom, I just think it's fine to pull for a school you didn't attend. What are your thoughts?

I think a lot of people don't understand the term "bandwagon". A bandwagon fan is one who cheers for a team when, and because, they are winning, and drops them when they are losing. Would the people who misuse the term consider anybody who didn't actually play for the Carolina Hurricanes at one time "bandwagon fans" of that team? Of course not. Would they say that anybody who didn't attend any college weren't allowed to be considered fans of any team? They might. But they would be wrong.

I agree with Ken's assessment of what the term "bandwagon fan" means. There's a difference to me between a fan and an alumnus. Alumni will naturally be fans of their school as they spent years of their life there and hopefully received a degree which they worked so hard for. Fans are just that...Fans. They purchase the apparel, they may go to games, they may even donate...but have no ties to the school other than that. I consider fans to be the driving force of rivalries...it helps keep them alive. Fans are the most important aspect to any school / franchise...without them sports wouldn't be what they are today. Just my 2 cents

For my two cents' worth, that is one thing (there are many more) that made me not giving a flying handshake about getting banned from the RAL - I don't care at all that jgunn didn't attend UNC, who cares? She likes UNC for why SHE likes UNC, and nothing more or less. She's got her reasons, she's entitled to make her own decision, end of story. It's a shame it can't just be the good-natured ribbing (and not much of it, at that) that goes on here, along with the humorous/serious discussions of sports and related issues we have on here, I'm so glad the nutbags over there think we don't have much of a forum (LOL, loooooosers that we are), what with all of their references to "Kollege" and "Rage" and "Pansies" and "Ratface" and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on - well, you get the picture. Once again (as usual), Ken hit bottom; "bandwagon" = "fair-weather", pull for a team when they're winning, making themselves part of "we" and "us" and "our" in the process, while treating that same team like a bastard at a family reunion (thanks, Dolly - MOVIE?) when the team isn't winning so much. Speaks to the quality of the person/people in question, in my opinion. Variety is the spice of life, folks, and if we all liked the same team it'd get real boring real quick. You go Gunny - and take your Heels with you.

There maybe some bandwagon fans in all fan bases. I don't agree that a fan jumps off of the bandwagon when their team loses. I think State probably has less bandwagon fans because they really haven't been on any kind of winning streak for someone to " jump on their bandwagon." I do think a lot of Duke fans have jumped on the bandwagon when Coach K start winning. Probably a lot of them have parents that were State fans and were ABCers. The parents are State Fans and their children are Duke fans. I know some families like that. I also think that Carolina has some bandwagon fans. During the Dean Smith era, a lot of young people jumped on the Tarheel bandwagon. I've said this before and I think that if State wants to succeed as a national power in basketball, they have to have a similar rivalry with Duke that they have with Carolina. Duke is a national power and creating a rivalry with them is important for their recognition. If you grew up in N.C., more than likely you chose one of the big 3 teams and became a fan of that team. As for the WRAL board, there are a lot of ass over there from all fan groups. Hell, I've been an ass myself over there. There's still some good discussion over there despite the trolls.

Gunny,
I agree with your sentiments. There are bandwagon fans of every successful team, whether it be college or professional. In my experience, I've seen a hell of a lot more UNC bandwagon fans (nationwide) than anywhere. That's not a knock against them...it shows their success and why people everywhere love them. I just happen to not be one of those people, but it's great for the sport to have two consistent national powerhouses right here in our state...it's what makes it so much fun!
now...Go to Hell Carolina! Lose in the super regionals...and since Duke isn't even there...GO GAMECOCKS!

I really have nothing much to add, as my thoughts go along with what everybody has already said. The only thing I have to say is regarding the whole thing about "we" when certain fans who did not attend a certain school refer to their favorite team/school. I'm not being a snob, nor am I trying to belittle ANY fan, but if ya didn't put in the time at *insert school here*, it ain't "WE". "We" is reserved for alumni or former players of a certain school. Sorry, that's just chapped my butt for years.

I agree with that Matt. I didn't attend Duke, so I try to avoid saying "we" at all costs...I always preface it with "Duke..."

The issue over on the RAL is with the trolls who are obnoxious and belittle the fans of other schools. I believe one can be a fan without attending a particular school and can be just as loyal as someone who did attend said institution of higher learning. I graduated from NC State, but support all ACC teams when they are playing out of conference schools. I even pulled for UNC against SC.

Cuss, If you don't believe Duke is just as big of a basketball rivalry to the WolfPack as is UNC, you didn't watch the celebration this past year when State won!

I would say when State beats Duke or anyone else they are happy and want to celebrate., but you can really believe State Fans hate Duke as much as Carolina. Hate for Carolina is what bonds State and Duke together. Next time would you use the quote button, so I will know what comment you're referring to.

Welcome, Amigo! Cool to have new people here, +1 for being one of "us".
Now, time to rat yourself out: What name (if any) did you post under over to the RAL sandbox?

I agree we are happy to have you here. I wish we could get more of the WRAL posters to come here. So, WELCOME to a place where people treat each other with respect, but can still disagree.

I haven't been posting recently because of an illness within the family that has taken quite a bit of my time. Hopefully the wife will get good results back with the next biopsy and MRI.

Today a lot of people who would probably not be watching a baseball game will be watching two ACC Teams going against each other. State and Carolina will be getting national attention on the baseball field. I watched the MSU vs OS game yesterday and the excitement of the game was impressive. I'm looking forward to sitting down and watching The Heels win this one. Rodon is one if not the best pitcher in college baseball. He will make things difficult for the Heels. I think he will want to make amends for the last game in which he made an error that cost State the game. Both teams know each other well having played 4 games this year. I don 't think any of the other teams know each other as well as these two teams do. Doesn't matter though, because a team must win to move on. Hoping we...oops, can move on with a win. Go Heels!!
