Seems kind of "obvious", but unbelievably sad for the families of the victims of the coward in Newtown. No words I care to type here for what I feel about a creature that would do something like that to anyone, never mind a beautiful, innocent child, REALLY never mind 20 of them. And right here at Christmas.
My knee jerk opinion is that it wouldn't be a bad idea at all to make it a law that there will be two full-time LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS (not "private security guards") at all schools at all times whenever anyone is present, even on things like teacher workdays. Local police/sheriff's deputies would do just fine. Two not enough? School too big? Too many students? Too heavily populated of an area? Go with four cops, eight cops, whatever will prevent this from ever happening again. Police/Sheriff Substation in the schools, for all I care, but this can NOT keep happening.
Hugs, deepest sympathies, and sincerest hopes that the families, friends, and community can somehow carry on after this, and my heart also weeps for the little children that have to go back to school tomorrow. There? Somewhere else? How can you even begin to explain that situation to a little child? No one can explain it to me.
If there is a God of any description and if there is a Hell of any extent at all, it is my most sincere wish that this animal somehow, someway be made to feel 26 times (or ever how many ended up dying aside from it) the pain, fear, and torment that it caused EACH of its innocent victims.
God, please comfort those poor families and all of the good people in that community. Deal with the coward as You see fit. Amen.

Amen Marty. I was saying the exact same things today at lunch with my wife's family. My wife and my sister-in-law are both teachers. Our two girls and their two boys are all in elementary school. This horrific event really hit home for us. I can't imagine the unbelievable grief those families must be feeling right now. I totally believe in uniformed officers at schools. Imagine how much less likely some monster like that nut-jon in Conn. would be to walk into a school and start shooting if he knew there was armed personel waiting to pop a cap in his ass as soon as he walked through the door.
I hope that piece of trash's soul burns in hell for eternity. God be with the families, and the devil be with him.

Absolutely! I was telling my wife the exact same thing. What pisses me off the most is people trying to make this political. SCREW THAT! Every time a tragedy occurs someone always has to bring politics into it. Politics have no place when it comes to tragedies such as this! I have 3 very young / small boys. 9, 5, and 3. So this really bothers me as well. I agree, ARMED OFFICERS need to be stationed at the schools. It's crazy to think their aren't any especially since similar things such as this at schools has happened before.
My sincerest condolences go to all of the children, teachers and their families. What a terrible way to "celebrate" a holiday.

What a terrible way to "celebrate" a holiday. Do we really want to send our children into locked and heavily armed fortresses to educate them? At what cost? And to what avail? Won't people driven by extreme anger or mental illness just find another place we once thought safe to express their rage?

That's a good point. There already are "resource officers" at the school's, but a lot of good it did in this instance.
Crazy is crazy...someone will find a way to harm people if that's what their wishes are. I don't have all the answers, but it's heart wrenching to see this happen over and over again. Whether it be at a mall, or a movie theater, a university or an elementary school...whether it be with bullets or some other weapon that causes mass damage....I certainly don't want my children to be afraid to go to school...i want them to feel safe...if having a few armed officers / National Guardsmen or whatever stationed at the school full time gives them that sense of security...I say make it happen...it might prevent some more children getting killed, or it might not...but we can't sit back and do nothing....that's for sure.

I'm not suggesting we need to turn our schools into fortresses, but an officer or two with means to use the force necessary to stop a murderous rampage is a good thing in my book. I know people will find ways to commit evil acts, but not on our children in school!
Final thought: The only thing that will stop a bad person with a gun is a good person with a gun.

As we see repeatedly, and in this most recent case, it doesn't take long to do horrific damage. So it isn't enough to stop a murderous rampage, you have to prevent it from starting. That means absolute lockdown all day long, plus perimeter security at the beginning and end of the schoolday. It probably means no recess or other outdoor activity. And how much will such security cost us? Will we vote higher local taxes to pay for it? History isn't encouraging on that score. And at the end of the day, we will just find that the bad guy has figured out a new place to wreak his havoc.

While having armed personnel in / around the school grounds may not eliminate this problem, it will drastically reduce the number of those who are killed. While 1 is far too many, I believe that 1 would proudly give their life to protect the lives of potentially hundreds. I would gladly vote to "YES" to higher taxes if it was for this sole purpose. I was going to put that in my original thought but left it out. The problem is, while you may help secure the inside of the building...that's not stopping someone from parking a car with an explosive close to the school and doing even more harm. I don't think there's any way to stop it entirely. Crazy is crazy, and people will find a way to harm others if that is their purpose.
