Though I'm loathe to admit it, I did find this link over to the Muthaship WRAL. For brevity's sake, as there is more than one link contained in this thread, I'll just post the initial thread link. www.wralsportsfan.com/ncsu/forum_topic/11428098/?d_comments_page=1Amazing (to me, anyway) the depth of the information that continues to be found out through no effort of the school involved.

Honestly, no one knows how much or little effort the school is putting into its investigation. They have repeatedly stated that they're not going to just throw out information before they're finished. A lot of what is being reported now was already known. It just wasn't put out for public consumption. Embarrassing? Yes. Some mass conspiracy at UNC to cover it up? Not likely. Sharks swimming in the water? Yep, sounds about right when you see non-UNC fans & the national media comment on it.

I pretty much stay out of that discussion, since it invariably deteriorates into the usual juvenile smack talk. Especially in the summer, when there is a 24 hour sports jones that needs to be fed and no games going on.

Kenny, I don't know whether there's a "coverup" afoot in the UNC Admin Offices or not, it's just almost surreal to me as a lifetime resident of this area to keep seeing stuff come out of this involving UNC, of all schools.
That being said, with the national "brand" that is UNC I don't see how anyone can even begin to feign shock or surprise when national media starts picking up on this stuff. Each "new" piece I've seen lately seems to make the total thing a little bit worse, in my opinion.
I'm not trying to agitate, or "down" UNC or their students, fans, athletes, etc.; I'm simply reading this stuff and wondering how much further this rabbit hole goes. Perhaps I should have ended my initial post with "... through no APPARENT effort of the school involved." True, UNC isn't being very public and open with what they're doing to investigate - then again, they haven't seemed to me to be very public and open throughout this whole mess. Covering one' eyes and pulling the covers over one's head doesn't make the monster go away. Just sayin' ...

As much as I would like to laugh out loud and do a happy dance about all the stuff coming out about UNC, I'm not. It's a very sad thing to read all the stuff that's coming out. Even though it's UNC and I loath everything associated with it, I hate to see any university, especially a NC school, go through all of this mess. I hope whoever is responisble for everything is punished to the highest degree and UNC can recover from this quickly. It won't be near as much fun to see the Wolfpack whoop some Tarheel butt if every game is overshadowed by the controversy.

I saw a report on ESPN the other day, forgive me for not remembering who the guy was, but he said that now the NCAA has PROOF that there are athletes (from all major sports at UNC) who graduated and received degree's and never attended an actual class. If that is in fact true and comes out as such, there is no limit as to what the NCAA might do to the programs at UNC. As a Duke fan, my hatred for all things athletically at UNC is very high. However, I hate to see the academics at any school be tarnished by an athletics program that was over zealous and thought they were above the rules.
Folks who have legitimate degree's in those programs are now looked upon as not getting it honestly, whether they were an athlete or not. That is extremely sad in and of itself. I hope for the academics sake at UNC that this is not true and is nothing more than a rumor. Athletically? I'm jumping for joy!

I'd say that anyone on ESPN or elsewhere making such statements are engaging in pure conjecture. I don't think anyone has said no one attended an actual class at UNC. I do think it is pretty well documented now that there were severe problems with some "independent study" courses where professor oversight of work did not rise to a proper level. Obviously, there is also some question about specific courses within the Af-Am Studies department in terms of attendance/work/etc. Everything I've seen has been related to specific courses and not that entire majors were "fake". Frankly, whatever the outcome, I think it is a good thing that the university is looking to clean this situation up. I don't honestly care about the athletic shenanigans as that stuff happens to some extent everywhere and you pay the punishment if you're one of the ones caught. I do care that the academic reputation of the university is at stake even if I didn't go to UNC myself.
