No way to know if this may have been precipitated in any way by any concussive or head trauma issues (like with the late, great Dave Duerson), but whatever the case may be it is a tragedy that Mr. Seau was apparently unable to deal with whatever pain or anguish that was tormenting him.
My heartfelt thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to his family and friends; having gone through the suicide of a beloved family member myself, there will always be the questions that can't be answered for those left behind to deal with forever. I only hope and pray some degree of peace and comfort can come to those close to him in the coming days.

I'm reminded of it every time something like this happens. And it happens with alarming frequency with athletes. I'm not sure if it's related as much to head trauma as it is to the sudden loss of the adulation most of these men have experienced since they were kids starring on the playgrounds. How hard it must be for someone who craves that attention to try to return to a "normal" life.

Even now, just under half his life had been as a PRO football player; throw in another four (three? I don't know for sure) at USC and 3-4 in high school, guy played competitive football at the highest level available to him for his age for close to 30 years. Maybe trauma, maybe depression. Either way, it's a damn shame.

Very sad to hear this on the news when I got home today. He was a great player and seemed to be a good guy with the talks he used to give to kids about staying positive. Yep, a damn shame indeed.

I am 30, so I grew up watching guys like Seau, Reggie White, and Derrick Thomas dominate defensively. Junior was one of the best linebackers of all time, hands down. He will definitely be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the Seau family.

I loved Junior Seau. I will never forget pulling for the Chargers against the 49ers in the early 90s in the Superbowl. I only pulled for them because of Seau. He was such an amazing person and player. In my opinion one of the greatest ever to play. This is extremely tragic and I hope his family can find peace in the situation. My uncle committed suicide a couple of years ago due to the amount of pain he was living with. It's such a shame that he decided to go in the manner he did.
RIP Junior - You will always be remembered.
