Larry Fedora’s recruiting plan to hit the state of North Carolina hard paid dividends once again late Tuesday night when Brian Walker became the latest in-state prospect to verbally commit to the Tar Heels.
“I committed about 10 minutes ago,” Walker said Tuesday evening. “I talked to Coach [Larry] Fedora and confirmed it with him.
“Timing wise, it just felt right. I wanted to have plenty of time to get used to the [defensive] system – the 4-2-5. It gives me a better jump to know what’s going on.”
Walker, a 5-foot-9, 168-pound cornerback from Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek, selected UNC over scholarship offers from Auburn, NC State, and South Carolina.
“I just talked to my family about it – I’ve been talking to them about committing for a while now,” Walker said. “I just felt like it was the place that I wanted to be at, at the end of the day. I took some visits down there and I had a great time. I love their plan to recruit the best players in the state and keep them in state – I’m just trying to be a part of that.”
Fedora was the only UNC coach Walker spoke to on Tuesday night.
“He was real ecstatic,” Walker said. “He was real excited. He said I made his night.”
Besides Fedora, Walker has maintained solid relationships with a couple other members of UNC’s coaching staff.
“I talk to Coach [Gunter] Brewer a lot and sometimes Marcus Berry,” Walker said. “They’ve always made me feel comfortable when I come up there. They always invite me to events – basketball games and other events – so that made me feel real welcome. The whole staff always made me feel real welcome.”
Now committed, Walker plans on helping UNC with its plan to keep North Carolina prospects in-state.
“I’m definitely going to try to recruit at my school first – like Anthony [Covington] and Marquez [North],” Walker said. “Then I’ll try to get the guys around the state.
“I believe we have a great shot at Marquez and Anthony, to be honest with you. I know Anthony has always had an interest in them and so has Marquez.”
Prior to Walker’s commitment, UNC had received five verbal commitments. Four of those five – Jordan Fieulleteau, Khris Francis, R.J. Prince, and Korrin Wiggins – hail from the Tar Heel State.
Walker said he doesn’t plan on visiting any other schools besides UNC. He’ll take his next visit to Chapel Hill in the coming weeks for a spring practice session.
