I've been very impressed for the most part with this UNC team. They are playing as a team, playing hard, and winning. That's all any coach / fan could ask for. I don't believe PJ will be coming back, but if he does, I think it may do to UNC what Kyrie Irving did to Duke...kill the chemistry. This team has figured out what works best for them and they are executing it very well. They've had a couple of really bad losses, but going 3-0 against then #3 Louisville, #1 MSU, and #11 Kentucky is very, very impressive.
I've said all year UNC was better than people were giving them credit for, even when PJ got suspended. Barring any injuries, I think UNC could make a big splash in the conference...maybe even win it. Right now it looks like Syracuse has the #1 spot, though.

Nobody's UNC fan here, but can't help but be a bit happy for the kids on the basketball team doing things the right way and/or not doing the stupid shit that Hairston has reportedly done (don't know what McDonald's issues are). Agree with you on Hairston's return and, you know what? F him, he did it to himself.

I am shocked to learn that UNC has not even petitioned for reinstatement of Hairston. Many, including myself, have criticized the NCAA for dragging their feet, but if what the NCAA says is true, there are no feet to drag. There is no enforcement issue for the NCAA until UNC says there is. They have declared PJ ineligible, for benefits received at a time of year when he was not participating in any games. Unless they used an ineligible player, there is no NCAA offense.
The question is why haven't they petitioned for reinstatement? My cynical brain says they were stringing PJ along until the first semester ended so he wouldn't leave school early and sabotage their APR calculations. I understand they are already flirting with APR sanctions, and another hit could cost them post season play, ala UConn. If they now formally kick him off the team before the second semester starts, they may be in the clear. But if that's what's going on here, UNC's behavior is worse than PJ's, IMO.

Marty, I hope you know that my comments aren't based on fan loyalties. I try to look at situations like this one on their own merits. Fact is, I/we still don't have a lot of facts with which to judge this case. And frankly, we're not entitled to any. I don't know what Williams, or Cunningham, or anybody else has said to this point to PJ Hairston. For all I know, they may be shooting extremely straight with him.
While we as fans aren't entitled to be in on private conversations, lack of candor is going to lead to speculation. But "no comment" is better than a wrong comment. Where schools or coaches open themselves up to criticism is when they make public statements that are later shown to be misleading. I do remember Williams appearing to criticize the NCAA when he referred to how quickly they ruled on Johnny Manziel, suggesting they weren't treating UNC the same way. As it turns out, the NCAA issued its ruling on McDonald within 7 days of receiving UNC's request.
I think he (Williams) owes the NCAA an apology.

This whole situation has been very confusing. The info about McDonald's suspension came out and it was because he "used" the rental cars that were provided by another "UNC teammate". He used the vehicles for 25% of the time apparently so he got the suspension...I don't know what the deal is with PJ, but I hope that the school isn't stringing him along as you suggested before. That would be really...really messed up.

That would be really...really messed up. THAT was why I asked "The Carolina Way?" earlier. My jabs don't have anything to do with the poster, but rather the subject matter. It's not an issue of "hoping" something is found at UNC; stuff HAS been found. The problem, as I see it from the UNC perspective, is that stuff KEEPS coming out. First it was football and Marvin Austin and improper gifts/benefits, then we moved to plagiarism/cheating with Michael McAdoo, then an entire academic department built on sand rather than stone, now an active member of the basketball program with the drug and traffic charges (couldn't care less that they were dropped) as well as the rental cars and consorting with a convicted felon. If I was a UNC alum/student/fan, I know I wouldn't be thrilled at the current state of the athletic program from the standpoint of perception. Reputations are earned over years, but they can be lost in minutes. That's not "Red Rage", or "ABC'ing", or "hating", or whatever other deflectionary tactic any blinded baby-blue leaning person wants to sling at me, that's fact. And before anybody even brings it up, if there's anything at all to the current issue with Shadrach Thornton at NC State I think his scholarship should be revoked and he should be permanently excused from State's football program for the exact same reason I've got an issue with P.J. Hairston - both young men were important members of their respective teams, with abilities and talents placing them into de facto positions of leadership on their teams, and each has royally screwed up UNDER THE LAW multiple times. Not only would it send a message to these two young men, but to every current and future team member as well; the message that entitlement and lack of respect for self, others, team, coaches, school, and community at large will not be tolerated, regardless of one's talent with one form of a ball or another. Period.

Well...two straight conference losses....bad ones at that. If Paige isn't shooting lights out and has good defense played on him...UNC has no answers it seems. Oh well. Doesn't really bother me that much.
