Also, I spoke with a few players from Chapel Hill over the weekend and they actually think Walt Bell will end up following Blake Anderson to Arkansas State. If true, UNC will be losing their best recruiter and their best candidate for OC.

There's been some chatter about Bill O'Brien (Penn St) making the jump to the NFL and that has apparently started to heat up as the NFL season nears a close. "Penn State coach Bill O'Brien amended his contract last summer with the intent to lower the buyout any NFL team would have to pay the school and make it easier for him to jump to the pros, a copy of the Nittany Lions coach's contract provided to ESPN reveals, and there already have been conversations to reduce the NFL buyout even further." Another shoe drops. Bill O'Brien adds another vacancy to the pile. I wonder how many more coaches will get lucrative contract extensions now.

Yep, O'Brien left for the Texans but it was only a matter of time before he left. This is a quote from O'Brien earlier this year... "You can print this: You can print that I don't really give a —— what the 'Paterno people' think about what I do with this program. I've done everything I can to show respect to Coach Paterno. Everything in my power. So I could really care less about what the Paterno faction of people, or whatever you call them, think about what I do with the program. I'm tired of it.
"For any 'Paterno person' to have any objection to what I'm doing, it makes me wanna put my fist through this windshield right now."
He was just getting started:
"I'm trying to field the most competitive football team I can with near-death penalty ——ing sanctions. Every time I say something like that and somebody prints it, it's skewed as an excuse. And I'm not an excuse-maker. I'm trying to do the best I can for the kids in that program. That's all I care about is the kids in that program. As long as I'm the head football coach here."
You won't find a more succinct characterization of the college coach mentality than those last two sentences. Moments later, O'Brien still ranting, came the money quote:
"That's why, in probably about a month, they're gonna be ——ing looking for a new coach."Link

Well, it's a combination of money and the meddling of the "old guard" at a school, much much more prevalent than the NFL ever thought of. Not opening up the whole Paterno-Sandusky thing again, but once Bill O'Brien became the Head Coach at Penn State what anyone with the name of 'Paterno' thought about anything mattered zero.

One might have thought that the cult of personality that existed at Penn State would have been broken by the terrible price the school had to pay. Apparently, it's not - at least not completely. That has to make their upcoming coaching search much more difficult.
Personally, I think Duke needs to begin to take steps now to prevent the same thing from happening to them in basketball in a few years. Coach K deserves the praise he gets for his body of work. But reading message boards suggests more than praise is going on. The word idolatry comes to mind. And Americans seem to take perverse pleasure in knocking idols from their pedestals. Duke had better hope there are no skeletons in their closet, because you can bet some people will start looking for them once K isn't around to block them.
As for PSU, what do you suppose are the chances they might reach out to somebody like Mack Brown to buy time and distance from the Paterno years?

Ken, interesting and cogent thoughts as always.
Agree with you on K at Duke, I'm not naive enough to believe this will be anywhere near the case, but once K is gone he should be gone. I don't mean never ever set foot on campus again or never ever go to a Duke game. What I mean is that, in my opinion, the retired coach doesn't need to maintain an office in the arena, and the coach/family damn sure shouldn't have any say in what goes on with the team/program any longer.
Interesting thought as well about Mack Brown to PSU. I don't think it will happen, but what do I know. Won't say it won't happen.

Don't care who PSU hires, if it's a nonPSU guy then the Paterno-faction will run him out of town as well. Franco Harris is a damn psycho.

Interesting perspectives, especially with regard to Coach K. I do agree they need to start putting things in place and even get someone lined up, secretly, to take over. I have a feeling after 2016, he's done. He'll be done as the USA and Duke head coach. Brad Stevens would've been my choice before he went to the Celtics.
I think Jimbo Fisher will go to Texas. He has openly stated it is his dream job, and Texas still has them on their list. Fisher just signed an extension at FSU but it did not exclude him from the Texas position...which is telling that was specifically stated.
We'll see.

I hadn't heard either of those things - that Fisher called Texas his dream job, or that Texas was an exception to any buyout clause. Where did you hear these things?

No, didn't say anything about a buyout. The extension does not exclude him from being a candidate for Texas, and he is still on their radar. I misspoke about it being Fisher who said "Texas is my dream job". It was actually Gus Malzahn.

Yea, I'll be interested in seeing how their coaching search unfolds. On one hand you have a program with a ton of history and tradition that has proven resilient in the face of the death penalty imposed by the NCAA. On the other hand, coaches talk and they'll certainly hear all about the Paterno people and what happened with O'Brien. Even having "Paterno people" in the conversation at this point should be a red flag for the program or anyone looking the position.

I disagree but we'll see. Chip Brown, the guy who called Mack and the AD resignations, said that they have interviewed Charlie Strong, James Franklin, and are now focused on Jim Mora. I've also heard Mark Richt is a name being tossed around as well. Who knows.
I did find this quote quite intersting today though...
@mcmurphyespn: Jameis Winston: "Even if Coach Fisher goes to Texas, I'm going to ask him can I go w/you? Yeah I'm serious. He's my coach"

That is very interesting! I could see Mark Richt at Texas as well....but I doubt it'll be him. Jim Mora? Maybe.

That is very interesting! I could see Mark Richt at Texas as well....but I doubt it'll be him. Jim Mora? Maybe. I wouldn't put much stock in Winston's tweet. He has one more year to wait before he can enter the draft - either for football or baseball. If he were to transfer to Texas, he'd have to spend it on the sidelines. The only thing interesting about this to me is that it makes it seem that Fisher hasn't told his players he's staying. But that could just be because he doesn't want to create a distraction by addressing the subject this close to the NC game. I do think Texas is targeting a coach still playing, which narrows the field considerably, but still leaves a lot of room. Fisher, Malzahn, Swinney, Urban Meyer, Franklin, Jim Harbaugh could all still be in play. If their guy is Mark Richt, they could have announced this already.

Pete Roussel ?@coachingsearch: A source has informed me that James Franklin will interview for the Penn State job on Sunday.
@footballscoop: Sources at both Miami & PSU tell us Al Golden to PSU is strong possibility.
......
From Pete Roussel of coachingsearch.com
ESPN's Joe Schad tweets, "Penn State source said Al Golden agreed to speak about the opening as early as today because 'It would be coming home.' Some former PSU players are supportive of Golden because he understands the Penn State community, would be a willing fundraiser and ambassador and understands the value of balancing academics and athletics."
