Looks like USC started things off in hiring Washington coach Steve Sarkisian. Personally I thought Orgeron would at least get a shot after turning around USC's season as the interim coach.
@schadjoe: Steve Sarkisian has accepted the USC head coaching position

I can't imagine the Deacons finding a replacement as good as Grobe. Do you suppose he just got tired of the grind of trying to win with the odds stacked against you?

I was really surprised by the Grobe decision. Maybe, as you said, he's just tired and decided to lay low for a while...or, maybe he is looking to go somewhere else...not sure.

Considering the season is now over for pretty much any coach who might have been on the hot seat, the carousel seems to be spinning mighty slow. I don't see Wake going after a young stud who would probably bolt if he were successful. I'm thinking a guy at least 50 years old, maybe even 55 or more, with head coaching experience, who would see this as the last stop. Virginia seems to be stockpiling guys who fit that description.

If true, this should shake things up a little.
@chipbrownob: High-level sources tell me Mack Brown will step down as coach at Texas after 16 years.

Mack Brown has since refuted the report and claims he's in Florida recruiting.
But SI's Stewart Mandel points out that Texas also refuted his (Chip Brown) report that the AD was stepping down - and then the AD did just that.
Stewart Mandel ?@slmandel: Just remember how Texas/DeLoss Dodds vehemently shot down @chipbrownob's Sept. report the AD was stepping down and then he did just that.
Definitely something to keep an eye on, it has potential to be a pretty big domino.

Also, for those who didn't hear, Wake hired Dave Clawson from Bowling Green this week.

When Oklahoma State went down, and Texas had a shot at winning the Big XII outright, I expect Brown was hoping that was his chance to step aside with his head held high and his thumb in the eye of his more vocal critics. Unless he knows something the rest of us don't, that might have been his last best chance. He's got to be getting tired of the grind by now. Texas can be a mighty small fishbowl when boosters are looking critically at you. I expect Mack to step aside. And Saban's wife notwithstanding, you can bet that rumor will start up again.

I agree Ken, I think Mack has to be tired of dealing with the pressure that surrounds the Texas job. And it appears the Saban rumors have already popped up...
Dean Blevins ?@deanblevins: Texas source tells me: "Saban sitting on 10-yr deal worth $100M & 1% of #LonghornNetwork." Smart way 2 get cooperation w non-stop TV cams
The amount of money coaches make these days is simply astounding.

At this point, I don't know anybody who believes there is any chance Brown returns to coach Texas next year. Does Saban's agreeing to a new deal with Alabama rule him out, or is it a negotiating ploy to get Texas to up the ante and act before the Alabama Board of Trustees can approve the new deal? At this stage in his career, Saban doesn't have to worry about whether reneging on an agreement just hours old would affect how other schools think about him. Whether it's Texas or Alabama, this is probably his last stop. And if not Saban, then who could satisfy the enormous egos of the Longhorn boosters? When they poached Brown from UNC, UT was no longer the plum job it was, and now is again. Could Texas really hire a guy who isn't already considered something of a coaching demigod? That's probably why Harbaugh's name pops up, even though the timing is awful for a coach in NFL playoff contention. Texas won't want to wait and sabotage an entire recruiting season. You can bet on one thing. Whoever the 'Horns pick, he will get a much more lucrative buyout deal in his contract than Brown got. In effect, Mack gets 6 months salary and a pat on the back. So who else is on the new ADs list?

When Texas hired Brown, everybody understood why he left Carolina. UNC would never get the respect needed to be ranked high enough to play for a national championship. Your schedule, playing in the ACC, would always be suspect, so your team would be suspect, too.
So how do you find a coach who has the kind of national credibility your boosters want but who is at a school where respect is an issue? Maybe you look to the Big Ten. All year, Ohio State was fighting the stigma of a perceived weak schedule, even while they had a 20+ game win streak going. Might Urban Meyer look at the grass in Austin being greener than it is in Columbus? Hard to imagine the Buckeyes not getting respect just for the name on their uniform, but I think we saw a little of that this year. Could that give Meyer second thoughts?

I can't imagine the Deacons finding a replacement as good as Grobe. Do you suppose he just got tired of the grind of trying to win with the odds stacked against you? Here's some insight from Grobe about his departure from Wake. Sounds like you were on the money, Ken. "When I first got there, no one thought we could win, even a game. We opened at ECU and no one thought we could win. Then we got to the point everyone realized we could win, We went to the Orange Bowl, then won nine games and then eight. Everyone realized we could win, but then we got to the point where everyone expected us to win. That’s not a good place to be at Wake Forest, especially if you’re not doing things to keep up with other programs. On one hand it was an honor they thought I could do it by myself, but at some point the school needed to step up and the best opportunity for that to happen was for Jim Grobe not to be there." Link

Another update - rumors have it that Arkansas State appears to have hired Blake Anderson as their new HC. Look for Walt Bell to replace him at OC for UNC.

"especially if you’re not doing things to keep up with other programs."
That sounds like code for "if you're not bending the rules".
