I am curious about how schools handle the payment of room and board for athletes who don't live on campus. Even with the different meal plans available it could be more complicated than it would seem to someone not actually involved with college students.
Do these athletes just get a check for some amount, either monthly or a semester at a time? And how much would that check be for? Most major schools have different dorm options available, and the cost of these options varies.
And do they get paid for the summer months, or only the spring and fall semesters?
If their school is located in a high cost of living area, can schools give them more for their rent?
If anybody here knows the nuts and bolts of how all this works, I'd appreciate it.

Hmm, I always thought if they didn't live on campus in the "sports dormitory", they had to pay their own rent if they lived off-campus, but that may not be the case at all. I'm not versed enough in that department to know for sure. I bet cvholt would have some input on this topic, though.

Actually, sports dormitories were eliminated years ago. Now, only a percentage (I think it's about 25) of the students in any dorm may be athletes, and even the number on any given floor is limited.

More proof that I don't know what I'm talking about!

Found this.. "Student-athletes, who have the approval of their Head Coach to live off campus, are responsible for selecting suitable housing. In this regard, they are encouraged to contact the Residence Life Office to obtain a guide of locations that have been inspected by the University. When receiving housing as part of an athletic scholarship, student-athletes who live off campus may receive a stipend in-lieu-of on-campus housing. Allowances for off campus room/board differ from on campus values. "Cash-in-lieu" checks are distributed at the first of each month, September through May, and the first of June and July during summer school." LSU Student Athlete Housing InfoI'll ask around this weekend and see if it differs for any of the schools around here, but I'd imagine they all follow similar protocol.

I saw that same LSU PDF but figured it was school specific...but you're right, they probably follow very similar guidelines.

"Allowances for off campus room/board differ from on campus values."
Do you suppose they get paid less, or more, than on campus housing costs?
