I saw on the RAL that due to the Gubment shutdown the DoD has suspended all travel for collegiate teams. Navy is scheduled to play Duke next Saturday (10/12) at Wallace Wade. If they don't show, does that count as a forfeit for Navy? Just wondering how that would work. Unless they find someone else to play (possibly Fresno State).
Any ideas? I would think if they don't show it'd be an automatic forfeit, but I'm not sure how the NCAA would handle it.

I doubt the NCAA would count this as a forfeit. They didn't make Colorado forfeit against Fresno, since the circumstances were beyond their control. To require the service academies to forfeit would be a public relations black eye the NCAA doesn't need right now.
That being said, I wonder how they would rule if Duke couldn't find an FBS replacement and as a result finished the year with a 5-6 record (having been denied the chance to play Navy for the sixth win required for bowl eligibility). Would they give Duke a waiver? Or Navy, for that matter, if they were one short of eligibility?
These are uncharted waters for the NCAA.

I thought about that too, Ken. If they can't find someone else to make up the game (should they not be able to play Navy), how does that affect the possibility of a bowl appearance? Does that automatically bounce them out of contention for a bowl?

I wonder if the NCAA would agree to allow another non-conference opponent to play an extra game so Duke (and Fresno, Navy, et al) could play 12? There are four AAC/Big East teams that have a bye week on Nov 2 when Duke would be available to host. It would probably have to be with a stipulation that the 13th game couldn't be counted by the other team toward bowl eligibility.

It's already been established that it wouldn't be a forfeit so that shouldn't be a concern. Here's an email from the NCAA...
"No, that would not be considered a forfeit. It would just be a “no contest,” meaning the game isn’t considered for wins, stats or anything else. If the schools can agree upon a makeup date, that’s entirely up to them. If not, the game is obviously not played and it’s one less chance at a win to qualify for a bowl."
I know Duke is looking at Fresno State, Eastern Michigan, and San Diego State as a possible options if things don't work out with Navy. Either way it's not a good situation to be in. Hope it works out for you guys.

Thanks for the info cv. That's a bummer, Duke was going to have a hard enough time getting to a bowl as it is...with the potential of a game being lost / not being made up...it makes it that much more difficult.
We'll see how it shakes out, I suppose.

Well after a legal review the government has okayed the academies to play this weekend.
"After nearly 48 hours of uncertainty amid the federal government shutdown, the Department of Defense gave the go-ahead for the service academies to play college football this weekend. That includes a game between Air Force and Navy in Annapolis, Md., which had been sold out and scheduled for a national network broadcast on CBS."
I'm not sure if the government shutdown will still be in effect, but it seems this may cast some hope either way?

I don't want to get political, so I won't say anything at all. Glad the games are a go.

Awesome! Good luck to all the teams this weekend...I hope Duke can pull one out against Navy. Boone is healing nicely and Cutcliffe might even pull a fast one and start him over Connette (if he's ready, of course). He was listed as day to day earlier in the week, so you just never know. That would be a huge boost, however Connette has played pretty good his last two games with 300+ yard games back to back. Nothing to complain about there!

Great to see Anthony Boone back out there this weekend. He looked great. Crisp passes and good decision making. Great win.
On to the next one.

Good to see he came back so quickly, he obviously is a difference-maker for Duke.
