I don't know where you get your info SeeVee, and I don't care. I know this season hasn't gone like we'd hoped, but you don't have a chance without solid recruiting and that is definitely one thing that this coaching staff is ahead of the curve on. Great job!

A little late getting with things today but I understand it that 5 star Kentavious Street committed sometime this morning. Not really surprising given State pretty much led the whole recruitment, I think it was just a matter of time. Doeren also missed on a big target today in Brock Ruble. The big OL picked FSU over State but I knew with the way our two seasons went it was going to be an uphill battle with him. I also believe Johnnie Dixon is poised to make a decision in the next week or so but we'll see how that turns out.

Just a heads up - Johnnie Dixon announces his decision sometime today. If you remember, I posted that Ohio State went all in on Dixon after one of their WRs decommitted and it looks to have paid off for them. The flip side to that is that it essentially sets up a showdown for Trevion Thompson between Clemson, NCSU, and UNC. As it stands right now - smart money is surprisingly on State. The staff has worked relentlessly on Thompson and he would be a HUGE get not only in terms of having a big play WR, but he also increases our chances with Derrell Scott. Speaking of Scott - after his MVP performance in the state championship this past weekend he named USC, Tenn, and State as his final 3 schools. I honestly have no idea which way he's leaning here but as I mentioned earlier I don't like going up against Tenne$$ee on the recruiting trail. A big factor with Scott is he doesn't want to be the only big time player going to whatever school he selects which is why the importance of Thompson's decision is amplified. Here's Trevion's profile by the way. Big 4 star talent out of Durham... Trevion Thompson

Couple of updates - Dixon indeed picked OSU and, in turn, eliminated OSU for Trevion Thompson. NC State and Clemson now lead for Thompson. Also, Florida offered Derrell Scott this week and that appears to be the offer he has been waiting for. His dad always wanted that "big time" offer and he finally earned it. Good for him and best of luck.

Trevion Thompson stated that he is set to make his decision relatively soon. He claims UNC, NCSU, WVU, and Clemson are all even but most seem to believe it's really between NCSU and Clemson. Hope we can reel him in, after last season I think it's safe to say we need all the help we can get.

Today was the end of the "no contact" period so the staff has been all over the place visiting recruits, and they didn't disappoint. Earlier today NC State accepted a commitment from Elliott Davis and they just received another commitment from 4* Troy Vincent. I admittedly never even thought Vincent was a possibility but he apparently just made the switch from Penn State. Profiles linked below. Troy VincentElliott Davis

Troy VincentElliott DavisI know class rankings are subjective, but they seem to be all over the map with respect to UNC and State this year. Scout has State ranked ahead of UNC (#20 vs #27) even though Carolina has more four star recruits (5 vs 3) and a higher average (3.25 stars to State's 3.04). Is that due solely to the fact that State has more commits (28 vs 20)? And given that you can only sign 25 in any given year, how does that affect the numbers? ESPN currently ranks UNC's class at #30 with 21 commits), with the Pack at #40 (29 commits). Rivals has the Heels at #17 and State at #27. Do some services just have a hardon for certain schools/conferences that affect their rankings? Inquiring readers want to know.

Ken, you can answer your own question if you think about it.

Ken, you can answer your own question if you think about it. Are you suggesting that Scout.com has the hots for the Wolfpack? If you add CBS sports rankings, three out of four services rank Carolina's 2014 class ahead of State's.

If recruit ranking was a more precise science, it would probably be better to rate classes based only on their 15 top recruits each year, since these would be the kids who would get the bulk of the playing time. But, while five star players rarely turn out to be college flops, it's awfully hard to distinguish between the late blooming 2 star and the average 3 star prospect. Most schools, even at the top of the food chain, have some if not mostly 3 star kids in their top 15.

That's why I've never gotten truly geeked over recruiting at large. True, a college program needs to be bringing in good prospects and have them pan out, that's a no-brainer. I do remember being cautiously optimistic when I heard about some man-child named Mario Williams signing to attend NCSU, knowing the area he is from is a small-town rural environment and not being really sure about the level of competition he faced in HS. Of course, that one turned out pretty well for the Pack but so many others (for State and other schools) have not.
Inexact science indeed.

Excellent question.
The final number is expected to be 30 for entire class (Boone will commit today) and we could possibly be taking in a JUCO transfer. To get back to 25 we had our 2 specialists grey shirt (which count towards 2015) and 3 players who enrolled early counted towards 13. Regarding the JUCO player, a loophole of sorts enables the staff to still pursue offensive tackle Quincy McKinney who transferred out of NCSU last year. Since McKinney enrolled at NC State and completed a semester, if he were to return McKinney would be allowed to count towards the class he enrolled (2012 I believe).
An even better question would be how the hell is Tennessee going to get their numbers down to 25. They currently have 34 commits and they're still not done (some analysts predict them to have 36 when it's all said and done).

Yep, Trevion committed to Clemson on his visit over the weekend. Many suspected he just got caught up in the 'hype' of the visit and committed. While I dismissed this at first, I found it quite interesting that he reached out to NC State after he got back to see if switching his commitment was a possibility. Very strange move for someone who had committed less than 24 hours ago. However, with the unexpected commitment of Will Richardson over the weekend, we simply couldn't take him without running off a commit or grey shirting him. On that note, Richardson's commitment was HUGE for State. The offensive line was the biggest priority for the staff and they worked overtime this year to get some much needed help along the front. Shawn Boone makes his commitment official and becomes the final piece of the 2014 recruiting class.

Here's a question for you. If a kid who delays his enrollment so he can be counted in the next year's class is called a grayshirt, what do you call the kid who enrolls early so he can be counted in last year's class?

I'm not sure. If there's a specific term outside of early enrollees, I've never heard of it. In any event, Yahoo Sports listed NC State as one of the 5 under-the-radar recruiting classes. 5 Under-the-Radar Recruiting Classes

Tennessee had 21 players in its 2013 class, so only 4 of this year's recruits could be early enrollees. That means they would have to park 7 players somewhere (either grayshirt or prep school). An alternative is to assume that some of them may not qualify academically, or that UT would rescind some offers. I'm sure they have a plan.

Ex-Wolfpack target Derrell Scott indeed ended up choosing Tennessee over South Carolina this afternoon. Another big get for the Vols as they now have 35 commits for 2014. Crazy.
