Halfway between po'd and disappointed. I do feel like the Hurricanes have had more than their fair share of injuries this year (best wishes to Joni Pitkanen on a full and speedy recovery), but while I'm nobody's expert hockey analyst even I can tell you the problem this whole damn season has been defense. Overall goaltending has been average (and I'm afraid my hometown bias is showing there), but for crying out loud the goalie can't constantly do it by himself, he needs some help.
I fell for it (again), I sure did .....

Canes have fallen flat on their damn faces. Disappointing considering how well they WERE doing. March was a disaster and April has started out that way. So much for those Playoff hopes.

I don't know, I know with Wardo out of the net - that has hurt big time. Along with other guys being injured...but still! There's little to no offense or defense coming from these guys. They were doing so awesome and then Cam goes down and BAM! It hink they've won 1 game out of the last 15 or 16. That's nuts. Not only are they just losing, they're getting shut out in a lot of them!

Ellis was filling in great for a while, and Peters was serviceable as a #2. The problem with this team all season, even before Ward got hurt, was defense. The Hurricanes have to work so much damn harder to get the puck in the offensive zone and get a scoring chance than just about any other team I've seen them play against. I'm not knowledgeable enough about hockey to know what the solution should be, but I know what I see.

Gotta find a way to get by, but I do think there's no doubt that Cam Ward's injury knocked these guys back and they just flat out didn't recover from it. That being said, I also will stand by my earlier posts (in the other thread, I believe), simply because of Jim Rutherford's quotes in the article in yesterday's N&O. The single biggest target for improvement this offseason will be the defense.
Yes, I believe there's some tweaking to do with the forward lines but I think with acknowledged "superstars" like Eric Staal, Jordan Staal, and Alexander Semin along with generally productive players like Jeff Skinner and my guy Tuomo Ruutu the offensive end is in good hands, along with the 'Young Guns' Westgarth, Blanchard, and Wallace (hope his eye/face is O.K.). On the assumption that Ward comes back 100%, I think Ellis is a great "#2" goalie (he should be good for about 15-20 starts a season with Ward being the "#1", in my opinion) and the goalie situation should be taken care of; I think Justin Peters may have some potential, but he's simply not ready for an NHL-level workload.
I don't know if it's philosophy or personnel or what, but the defense has to tighten up.
