Marcus Stroman Suspended 50 Games for violating minor league drug programHis story is he "accidentally" ingested a banned substance from an over the counter drug. Duke fan or not, I do not condone cheating in any way, shape, form or fashion. He deserved the suspension. You have to know what you are ingesting.I don't think anyone, including myself, is buying his story.

I can see where it would be easy to "ingest" a banned substance that is part of / a whole "ingredient" in a product (an energy bar, a nutrition shake, a vitamin, a supplement, etc.). However, I'm very surprised how OFTEN this continues to happen: why don't the franchises REQUIRE all of their employees subject to drug testing to get "permission" via team doctors (and, if need be, attorneys) prior to taking anything they're not 110% sure of?
I'm pretty sure the 50 game suspension would be without pay, no? For even a marginally or, hell, a minimally paid baseball player 50 games' worth of coin would have to be around $250K or so. Damn expensive energy drink, if you ask me.

Very interesting perspective, and one that I agree with. And yes, that is a mighty expensive snack!

You would think that with all the stink about "banned substances" that's been raised over the past few years, all players would be more careful. But, I guess some will never learn.

I'm not going to say he was trying to get away with something, it could legitimately be an innocent thing. I just think with all the legal health and performance products out in the market today, the franchises would have a better handle on it, I wouldn't even leave it to the players to "ask if they're unsure".
Remember: heroin is a derivative of poppy seeds. I don't know how many it would take over how long of a period of time, but is it conceiveable that someone could test positive for heroin who's never taken a pill or drank anything stronger than orange juice in their life? I say "yes". I would just have a safety system in place if I was a franchise owner, there's too much of a financial stake in these guys for them to not watch it more closely, in my opinion.

You're right Marty. If it's so big of a deal, then put some "safe guards" in place to help the players prevent any "oops".
