I know, I know. I can't help if this was over to the RAL, the topic at hand is very interesting, in my opinion.
I posted a couple of weeks ago in another thread about how Purvis was called for a hand-check on a Miami player in the second half of the State-Miami game when replays CLEARLY showed no contact at all was made. Yet, on the other end of the floor, Vandenburg attempted a left-handed jump hook from about 6 feet out and was literally chest-bumped in the air by (I believe) Reggie Johnson and no call was made at all.
I say this not at all to "complain" that refs cost State the game, etc., etc., etc. I simply use this as an example of a game I was at personally and plays that I observed personally. Did they affect the outcome? In all likelihood, no, but who can say for sure? All I've ever wanted as a fan in general is for the game to be officiated fairly and, more importantly (in my view) CORRECTLY. Not hard, is it? Foul occurs, official sees foul, official calls foul.
And while we're on the subject, how can it be OVER AND OVER AND OVER that two players collide on the baseline, one (presumably) on offense and the other (presumably) on defense, an official is literally just a few steps away with a ringside seat for the physical contact, yet the official out at halfcourt is the one coming in making the call as to whether it's a (for example) block or a charge? An official RIGHT FREAKIN' THERE never moves a muscle while another one comes running in blowing his whistle and flapping his arms like a mad fool to make a call that he would've had to have been able to see through at least half a dozen very large human bodies, in motion, with accompanying pairs of arms and legs.
I'm sick of THAT, and I'm sick of inconsistent enforcement of hand-checks. Not more than a few seasons ago hand-checking was a "point of emphasis" for ACC officials. What a crock. And another thing (in full agreement with the article, because I've been calling for this for years in both football and basketball) - the time has long since arrived for "NCAA" officials rather than "ACC", "SEC", "Big 10", etc. referees. The sports are standardized, played by a uniform set of rules regardless of conference affiliation, it's high damn time the NCAA officiate the games rather than the conferences. Will there always be room for complaints about a perceived bad call or missed call? Yes. Will never be able to completely do away with that as long as humans officiate the games, and I can live with that.
Consistency and common sense. Those two things ain't too much to ask for.
