<rant> I would like to go on the record saying "Sonoma and Infineon road courses, SUCK!"
To me, it's not enjoyable to watch road races...I don't know what it is about them, to me, they don't have a place in NASCAR. Open wheel, yes...but not NASCAR.

I agree! The road courses are like watching paint dry. Leave the twisties to the open wheel guys (which I never watch) and let the NASCAR boys make circles.
I think it's funny that the biggest, most celebrated open wheel race, the Indy 500, is on a circle track!

Stock cars are too big and heavy to put on a good show at a road course; they're designed to run in "lines" (i.e., high line, bottom groove, etc.). There's no way in hell to set a stock car up for a road course, the "best" car is usually the one that rolls off the truck best-balanced, qualifying be damned (what happened to Ambrose?). Congratulations to Bowyer, road course races pay the same points as "regular" races, but they could ditch the road courses altogether and I wouldn't lose a second's sleep over it.
And, please, for the love of humanity - it's bad enough we're stuck with this contrived "chase", don't put a road course race in the last 10 races too.

Matt, that is hilarious! I never really thought about the open wheel guys 'big race' being on an oval! LOL that's funny right there.
Marty - I agree with you whole heartedly. If they add a road course to the chase that'll be the suck, indeed.

No road courses in the chase!!!! It's bad enough to have them in the schedule at all!

Agreed!
Of course, since you're a State fan, I knew you had good sense to start with, hehe.

Honestly, at least a road course is different. NASCAR seems hell bent on making every single race ran on a 1.5 mile flat track or at least 80-90% of them. Boring. Fewer races on Bruton Smith owned tracks would be nice. Stop taking races away from the traditional tracks. We've lost 5 races from North and South Carolina ( 2 at N Wilkesboro, 2 at Rockingham, and 1 at Darlington) in favor of cookie cutter tracks like Texas, Kansas City and Chicagoland. Though, for me I suppose it doesn't really matter. My desire to watch racing was severely curtailed the moment they announced the Chase in the first place. If it weren't for the naming-rights fees, I'm sure their hubris would have had the racers competing for the France Cup a long time ago.

I agree that it's a damn shame a lot of races have been taken away from the traditional tracks. NASCAR has become so commercialized, it's like watching a long advertisement. However, I still love it, even if it is not what it used to be.

I think local track racing is the way to go now. It just feels like old school NASCAR. Probably because they're actually racing souped up street cars as opposed to fiberglass frames made to resemble a street car on top of a hi tech racing chassis.

I was in SC last year and we went to a local drag strip - it was awesome! I thoroughly enjoyed it. However, I've gone to Southern National Speedway and hated it. It wasn't exciting to me at all...I love NASCAR but they need to bring some passion back into the racing...they got rid of the 2 car tandem, which is good b/c that was just boring....I don't really have great ideas of how to make it better....I just want it to be exciting like it once was. Every once in a while you'll see a photo finish and great racing...but I'd like to see more of that...it used to happen more often, now it's like I'm watching every race over and over again - nothing changes.

Tizu, the easiest way to get more excitement is to go back to the car they were running before the current car. I think the "COT" car has taken away a lot of the hard racing we used to see. I don't know if it's the aerodynamic packages or what, but I remember a lot more exciting moments during the races before the new car.
As much as I like NASCAR, I prefer drag racing over stock car racing. If I had to choice of tickets to a NHRA event or NASCAR event, I'll take the NHRA tickets. First, nitro cars are freakin' awesome! Second, you get to walk through the pits at drag races without special badges. Third, there's so much variety. You've got sportsman classes, Pro Stock, Funny Car, Top Fuel, pro stock bikes, etc.
I used to go to all the IHRA events at Rockingham. I haven't been in a while, but if somebody wants to go, let me know and we'll take a trip down US 1 this fall for the IHRA World Finals. IHRA doesn't get the TV exposure that the NHRA does, but it's as good if not better. IHRA pro stock cars aren't limited to 500 cubic inches like NHRA. Those boys run 800+ cubic inch mountain motors. They also have a class called nitro coupe. Those things are crazy! AND, their motorcycle class runs nitro! You haven't lived until you've watched Top Fuel cars throw flames from the pipes at night. It's a thing of beauty.

I agree about the COT. From what I understand, Chevrolet is going to replace the "Impala" and bring back the "Caprice"....but it won't be as ugly as the original Caprice....Google it, it's a pretty sweet looking car. Also, the new Ford Fusion is SHARP! I know it's a Ford...but that dang thing looks like a race car all on it's own.
I agree that IHRA and NHRA are definitely exciting to watch. I've thought modifying an older Camaro and getting it "drag strip ready"...just because it'd be so much fun!

If you want to start swinging wrenches on an old Camaro, let me know. I'll bring my hands, some tools, and a cooler of cold beverages. I've been a gearhead since I read my first Super Chevy magazine when I was 12. I've got a '92 Camaro that I've had since new. It needs some work since it's sat for so long. I would love to swap in a LS series motor and convert it from automatic to a 6 speed. I also have my grandfather's '64 Oldsmobile Jetstar 1 sport coupe that needs a good restoration. Ahhh....so many projects, so little time and money. The fastest car I've ever had was a '99 Z28 with some bolt-ons. It was a rocket, but when the kids came, it went.
